UNC Basketball: Tar Heels Keep Rolling!

UNC Hoops Talk Podcast #167

After the huge week last week, UNC was due to slip up right? Wrong! The Tar Heels kept it right on rolling playing well and taking down Florida State and Syracuse at home!
After looking back over those, we turn to the final 2 road games of the regular season for the Heels, at Clemson and at Boston College.

As always, thanks for listening and Go Heels!

UNC Basketball: PANIC TIME?

UNC Hoops Talk Podcast #136

What a week for Tar Heel basketball! Unfortunately, I don't say that in a good way. A winless week for UNC Hoops, 3 losses in a row and our 5-star recruit suspended by the university for who knows what (oh yeah and Theo's injury)!
I try to dive into the games as best I can. Then I look at the Pitt game this weekend before I give any input I feel I can on Jalek.

Until Next time, thanks for listening and Go Heels!

UNC Basketball: The Dog Days of the ACC/College Basketball!

UNC Hoops Talk Podcast #135

One week off and it seems like I am way behind! Lots of games since the last podcast and almost exactly like I predicted.
I will quickly go through those as I didn't get to see all of all those games. The up and downs of ACC play continue.
Then we look ahead to the next week of games as well!
Plus in the UNC news: UNC misses out on another top recruit! Plus is there chemistry issues between some Tar Heel players?

Until Next time, thanks for listening and Go Heels!

Update- End of Year Podcast!

UNC Hoops Talk Podcast #74

It's been a crazy end of the year for me! Hope its been a good holiday season for you and yours, like it has for the Tar Heels!

Amongst the moving, holiday season, and sick kids it has been a little rough on me. Not too mention losing my voice, for those reasons I had to keep this one pretty short.

I apologize for that and look forward to talking with you again next week!

Happy New Year & Go Heels!

UNC Weekly Press Conferences 1/2/14

The time has come, non-conference play has come and gone, leaving the Tar Heels with an 8-4 record heading into ACC play.

Speaking of ACC play, which should be quite interesting this year especially, this brings us to this week's press conferences leading up to the Clemson game on Saturday. Roy and Brice Johnson spoke with media on Friday and spoke often about the increase in speed and intensity that conference play brings.

It will be interesting to see how our guys respond and especially the freshmen being exposed to it for the first time.

Here is postgame coverage from out last game the William & Mary game: W&M Postgame

UNC Basketball Preview- Georgia Tech

Preview: Tar Heels head into the Yellow Jackets’ Nest
     Article by: Lance Dunlap
                    @LanceLovesHeelsDisplaying UNC.vs.GT.logo.jpg

Coming off a solid win over the Clemson Tigers, North Carolina (12-7, 2-4 ACC) will head to Atlanta Wednesday night to play ACC foe Georgia Tech (11-9, 2-5 ACC). The Yellow Jackets are recovering from a stinging overtime loss to NC State in Raleigh this past Sunday. Both UNC & GT currently only have 2 wins in ACC play and a win for either will put them solidly in the middle of the packed ACC standings. This year, Georgia Tech doesn’t appear to get a great advantage from playing at home in McCamish Pavilion. So far this season, GT has defeated Illinois and Norte Dame in the Pavilion while losing to Dayton and Miami in the same arena. On the other side of the coin, the Tar Heels have most certainly struggled on the road, losing all of their ACC road games thus far this season (at Wake Forest, Syracuse, and Virginia).

Carolina fans not as familiar with this year’s Georgia Tech squad can expect to see Trae Golden (6’2” senior transfer from Tennessee) as the prime scoring option for the Yellow Jackets’ offense. Golden currently leads the team in scoring at 14.3 points per game, having some better games recently with 18 points against NC State and 22 points vs Pitt. On the defensive end of the court, the Jackets are anchored by their mammoth center, Daniel Miller (6’11” 275 lbs senior center). Miller is currently averaging 8 rebounds per game and 2.1 blocks per contest, including a 14 rebound performance vs NC State and 5 blocks against Pitt. While Miller doesn’t have the offensive skillset of many NBA-hopeful big men in college basketball, he is efficient and is shooting 60% from the field on the year. To play well against GT, North Carolina will need to focus on these players, keeping the ball out of Golden’s hands and letting UNC’s post offense go against the post defender opposite Miller.

Tar Heel fans should expect James Michael McAdoo to continue his strong play against Georgia Tech as McAdoo has made 20 of 33 field goal attempts in UNC’s last three games. McAdoo was also named the defensive player of the game against Clemson by Roy Williams, showing that his entire game is warming up here in ACC play. The play of Marcus Paige has been a little up and down recently, but overall he continues to make good decisions for UNC and is clearly an overall positive for the team. Paige went 4-14 from the field for 9 points in a loss to UVA, but had 15 points vs Clemson and 21 points against Boston College. The biggest X-factor may be the newest member of Carolina’s starting line-up, Kennedy Meeks. If he continues his good play (very polished for a freshman) and is able to keep his stamina up for stretches, his size and talent will prove trouble for GT.

A win on the road in Atlanta could provide some away-from-home confidence for a Carolina team that hasn’t won outside the Dean Dome since their December 4th victory in East Lansing over Michigan State (almost two months ago). A loss could be devastating for this young group of Tar Heels that need to string together consistent victories if they hope to find themselves seeded for the NCAA tourney. If Roy Williams’ track record mid-season at North Carolina is any indicator, Tar Heel fans should expect good things from this team. Don’t forget, it was around this time last year that Roy Williams inserted PJ Hairston into the starting line-up and UNC went on a 6-game win streak in the ACC.

The Streak Lives On- UNC/Clemson

Article by Lance Dunlap
@LanceLovesHeels

Rarely in college basketball do we see any team dominate another team for an extended number of years. Most college basketball programs have close to a .500 record against most other programs. However, there are a few programs that have separated themselves over the years as consistently great. These programs are known as the blue bloods of college basketball and are (moving East to West) Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, and UCLA. Some may argue Indiana and/or UConn belong in this group, but most believe these are the clear top five college basketball programs of all-time. With that said, the current streak UNC has against Clemson in Chapel Hill is like nothing the other blue bloods have accomplished or anything else in the history of college basketball. After the Tar Heels’ Monday night (surprise) blowout victory over the Tigers, UNC improved its all-time record vs Clemson in Chapel Hill to 57-0, an NCAA record. That’s right; the Clemson University men’s basketball program has NEVER won a game in Chapel Hill.

 photo FE45BDE2-5FA5-46D2-8F44-32FD02F7E31F_zpsycoiggix.jpg

Dating back to the first time North Carolina hosted Clemson in 1926 (88 years ago), Clemson has yet to come out of Chapel Hill with a win. Just let that sink in. That dates back to when North Carolina played in the Tin Can, to Woolen Gym, to Carmichael, and finishing (at the moment) in the Smith Center. When most Tar Heel fans think of dominance, they think of Tyler Hansbrough going 4-0 vs Duke in Cameron (or Hansbrough) Indoor Stadium and/or Roy Williams’ undefeated streak at home against NC State since returning to UNC in the 2003-04 season (Roy has only lost twice in Raleigh to NC State in that same span). However, both of these streaks are just drops in the bucket compared to the authority with which the Tar Heels have handled Clemson in Chapel Hill over the last century. Oddly enough, Clemson was almost able to end the streak (most Clemson fans call it “the curse”) against one of the best teams UNC has ever fielded. In the spring of 2008, Clemson took #3 ranked UNC into double overtime in Chapel Hill before Carolina was able to pull out a victory. That North Carolina team finished the season 36-3 (most wins ever by a UNC team) and returned most of its players to march on to the 2009 NCAA Championship.

Many people thought this week’s game in Chapel Hill might bring an end to the streak as the Tar Heels had been struggling this month, starting ACC play 1-4, and Clemson had started conference play so well, beating Duke just two weeks earlier. However, about halfway thru the first half, the Tar Heels’ defense gained intensity and held the Tigers to just one field goal for a little over 18 game minutes, spanning from first half into the second half. During this time, Carolina found its groove with 8 different Tar Heels scoring in the first half and then extending the UNC lead to as much as 31 points in the second half before cruising to an 80-61 victory. For a fan base that hasn’t had much to cheer about thus far into the 2014 calendar year, this victory revived hope that Carolina can return to its early season form and compete in this new, deeper ACC. The coming weeks will show if this intensity and focused can be sustained by Carolina or if this young team needs more development and time to mature.
